
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the staff supervisor, interviews incoming patients or family members to obtain registration and reimbursement information. Performs reception and clerical duties necessary to assure the efficient operation and record keeping of the department. Answers and directs telephone calls to the appropriate staff. Maintains patient confidentiality and professional appearance to insure patient and public confidence.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Medical or clerical experience; 50 wpm keyboard skills; Excellent spelling, math, problem solving, filing, telephone and data entry skills; Ability to work independently and with co-workers; Communicate effectively with patients and professionals; Ability to prioritize, organize and attend to detail.
Preferred: Medical terminology and limited ICD-10 coding knowledge. Knowledge and skill in electronic health record software utilization.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
Medium physical/mental capabilities required. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and push a wheelchair up to 250 pounds. Assist a patient in and out of chair, wheelchair or from an automobile and be able to ride in an elevator. Must be able to work independently as well as with physicians, patients/family members and other co-workers courteously. Must be able to prioritize work demands and organize time efficiently. Able to work within time constraints, high stress situations and multiple tasks. Must be able to perform monotonous and repetitive tasks (i.e. scanning). Excellent problem solving skills required. Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions with accuracy. Must have excellent customer service skills.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Performs patient and visitor reception and directs patient to the appropriate location.
• Registration duties such as obtaining and verifying insurance and billing information. Able to accurately process information for all insurance types as well as obtain the necessary information for insurance types that are not familiar.
• Prepares identification bracelet and paperwork used during patient care in a timely manner.
• Maintains >95% accuracy.
• Ability to look up non-scheduled patient exams in the data base.
• Handles stress and pressure and ability to make decisions.
• Gathers all new patient information and assembles all new patient charts in electronic medical record.
• Processes medical and radiation oncology electronic patient medical records for the next day’s visit.
• Schedules new, follow-up, and ancillary tests as ordered by physicians.
• Arranges consultations with other specialists and universities.
• Receives and directs phone calls.
• Scan all patient information, lab, radiology scans, and physician correspondence to insure all past and current information is available for the physicians/staff.
• Trains and orients new department clerical staff.
• Communicates effectively, both in person and on the telephone. Must be able to work and interact with a variety of personality types.
• Maintains a positive attitude and purposefully chooses to be kind and supportive to all coworkers and patients.
• Registers patients for Hugh Currin house.
